It started out as a perfectly lovely afternoon. We went to go meet a few friends at the splash park and let the kids play. Clara absolutely loves the splash park. We got there before anyone else and Clara started to play in the water. About ten minutes later everyone arrived so I was talking to them for a minute. As they were going to get their stuff from the car I looked over and saw Clara running full speed toward the toy with the water coming out. Out of the corner of my eye I saw another girl, older, start running full speed. But she was running straight towards Clara's path. Sure enough Clara didn't see her coming since she was coming from the side. I am not sure exactly what happened because all of this happened within seconds. But I saw a collision, a big one. The other girl wasn't hurt because I am guessing Clara ran into her shoulder or elbow or something, because she got right up and started playing again. Clara was not so lucky. She was screaming in pain. I ran as fast as I could to go see if she was okay. She is usually a pretty tough little girl, especially if she is doing something she loves to do, like swimming. So I knew she was pretty hurt when she would not stop crying and wanted to just sit by me.

This picture was immediately after the collision. It was instant bruising. I knew then that she would have a black eye.

A few minutes later the swelling began as well. She probably just sat and cuddled with me for a half hour afterwards. But after that she acted totally fine and wanted to play again.
We stayed for a little while longer but then went home so the kids could get a nap. Below is what she looked like when she woke up. I was shocked at how huge it had gotten. It is kind of hard to see in the pictures but the skin was so stretched it was all white and shiny over the largest parts.

So since it kept getting worse we were super worried she could have broken bones in her face so we decided to take her to instacare that evening. My sister Morgan came over to watch Liam and we headed off. When the doctor looked at her eye she was shocked. She said she had never seen such a severe black eye in a child. So she started to check it out by pressing on it to see how badly it hurt. It was actually really funny, Clara just stood there looking at the doctor while she was pressing her eye. She never flinched. The doctor was so amazed that she wasn't in pain so she kept trying it over and over and even went to check with the other doctors to see if they could think of something that she was overlooking. But they couldn't. So they said just watch her and it will probably take several weeks to heal. If it keeps getting much worse don't hesitate to come in again. We were relieved and amazed!

Here she is eating her frozen corn meant for her eye.

The next day or two it got much darker. And blood started to creep into the white of her eye. It ended up getting super close to the iris, but as long as it didn't leak into the color part of her eye the doctor said it was okay.

The colors on her eye matched her dress!

I was so amazed. Clara never once complained. It did not even seem like she remembered she had a black eye, except when she looked in the mirror. I remember a few months after this I asked her what color her eyes were. She said black, haha! Normally she said blue.

This picture was weeks later!

Liam and Clara just playing together.

It is now about four months later. I would say it finally went away totally two or three weeks ago. I ended taking her back to the doctor after some of the swelling went down. It was about two months after the incident and it was still swollen and bruised. And part of it was hard underneath the skin, I was afraid it was a piece of bone. But the doctor did a pretty thorough exam and concluded that it was probably soft tissue but to come in if it hadn't gone away in another month. But about a month later the hard spot was almost gone although some swelling and bruising were still present. I can't believe how long it lasted. But I am sure glad she was okay and it was nothing serious. But she sure had a VERY impressive black eye!
